Why a Marriage and Family Therapist may be the best fit for you.

Last Updated on February 22, 2024 by Coleman Connolly Counseling

If you are looking for a couples therapist in Charleston, SC chances are you’ve asked friends and family for a referral, searched couples therapy near me, and looked through therapists profiles on the Psychology Today provider finder.  With so many therapists to choose from, how can you tell which therapist will be a good fit for you and your partner?  One factor to consider when you look for a therapist is the training and experience of the therapist.

A marriage and family therapist (known as MFT or LMFT) is a licensed professional who specializes in treating mental and emotional problems in the context of families and relationships. They can help couples of all types improve their communication, resolve conflicts, rebuild trust, and enhance intimacy. They can also provide premarital counseling, grief and loss counseling, relationship counseling, family counseling and individual counseling.

A marriage and family therapist can offer a unique perspective and approach to couples therapy, as they consider how the individual, couple, and family systems interact and influence each other. They can help couples understand how their family of origin, cultural background, life experiences, and personal values shape their expectations and behaviors in their relationship. They can also help couples develop skills and strategies to cope with stressors and challenges that may affect their relationship, such as parenting, finances, intimacy, health issues, or work-life balance.

Marriage and family therapists do not find fault or pick sides as they work with couples to promote cooperation, growth, healing and relationship strengthening.  Reaching out for help can be daunting.  If you and your partner are ready to try couples therapy, consider making an appointment with a licensed marriage and family therapist.
